Sea Dawn

about

Almost every one of my combat synthesizer was honored to become a canvas on which another version of Sea Dawn was written. There were versions recorded on Lel-22, on Electronics-EM25. A couple of versions were recorded on Korg M1 and further - on all workstations from Korg, a new image of Sea Dawn was created, the birth of which, as a musical work, took place back in 1988 - out of touch with any musical instrument - just in the head.

It is worth adding that there are several versions performed with varying degrees of clumsiness on an acoustic piano. And only Korg KRONOS - at the moment my main working tool - has not yet been used for this, but the re-creation of “Sea Dawn” on Kronos is present in the closest plans.

The work sounded in many concerts and in a wide variety of versions. But the most successful one to this day seems to me the embodiment created in February 2007 - 12 years ago - on the Korg TRITON Extreme 88 workstation. In the same year, the track was included in the AD ASTRA collection of electronic music, timed to Cosmonautics Day. Next to the “Sea Dawn” were such masters of the domestic electronics as Andrei Morgunov and Igor Kezlya (New Collection), Oleg Gurtovoy and the VEGA group, EXIT project. Didier Marouani was expected to participate, but for legal reasons his track “Magic Flight” could not be included in the compilation. But it was possible to unleash the founder of the group “Space” for a small review, which was printed on the back of the CD insert. To touch even the word of each track in such a short format was impossible. But “Sea Dawn” from Maruani got it. And for me, such a response is certainly valuable.

But, to be honest, I myself do not think that “Sea Dawn” is closer to Space than at least the same “Start to Infinity” by Oleg Gurtovy. But in that era, when I composed my work, my reference points were no longer Maruani's compositions, but Jean-Michel Jarre albums, and it seems to me that “Sea Dawn” was the same thing. Of course, I could be wrong, because Jarre has not yet responded to my work. But, no matter how it was, this essay is very significant for me.

Maybe because of such great importance, I am in no hurry with the final release of either the track or the album in which it should sound - “Aegean Sea”. Even on the site until today, the best version of this tune was not found. And last night I decided to raise the arrangement from the archives, re-translate, re-record, make a new mastering and place on the site.

I practically did not have to retake it. As part of the arrangement, everything was not bad - I corrected some inconspicuous trifle in the balance sheet. But this does not mean that the arrangement itself is satisfied for all 100 - here there is something to work on.

But in terms of mastering, the track got the full program, and I guess I overdid it. Although, after listening to different options, before and after, I decided not to roll back the process. Because there is no ideal to achieve. But even if it sounds louder.

For comparison, I’ll give a practically uncompressed version of 2007 - there the beginning is quite quiet and the track as if from somewhere beyond the sea horizon can hardly be heard. But over the past 12 years, Sea Dawn has become noticeably closer to the listener. In particular, now there is a page about it on the site, and a beautiful cover, and all this in the highest quality can be completely free to download and listen without connecting to the Internet - on your phone, tablet or computer.
